Democratic Republic of Congo: Human Rights

For over a quarter-century, former President Mobutu repressed opposition forces and subjected the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to personal rule. ADF provided assistance to support the promotion and protection of human rights in the DRC from 1991 to 1995. Technical and financial support increased the capacity of three independent human rights organizations during this time:
  • ADF helped the Zairian League for Human Rights to expand its program activities. These activities include human rights monitoring and education as well as publishing reports on the state of freedom in Zaire and a journal promoting human rights.
  • The Voice of the Voiceless serves to promote human rights, provide assistance to victims of rights abuse, organize grassroots human rights committees, and also serves as an advocate for democratic reform.
  • The Zairian Association in Defense of Human Rights assists victims of human rights abuses and carries out important educational activities.
